One of my favorite things about sharing my work is hearing from others who’ve made similar leaps—people who’ve walked away from the known to follow something deeper, more honest, and more aligned with who they really are.
I do wish I could do the same. I envy you. But I have a need for doctors nearby and I am much older than you. Besides my hubby would never do that. And I don’t plan to leave him - ever. 💕
Thanks - I'm glad they're resonating. It's so much fun for me to share them - with hopes of reminding others what's possible and that they're not alone. 💖
Love this! If I'd have known I was going to live this long, I'd have chucked the whole gig long ago and run to the mountains. There is still time, for sure, but, oh, to have done it as a young, strong, gal overflowing with the spirit of adventure.
Just reading through the post, these words got me, "The decision to walk away from comfort isn't easy." The more i share my everyday stories here on substak the more comfortable it is to embrace my journey.
Never too late to start living a more soul aligned life. It looks different for everyone and it definitely requires humility. I'm on this path too, may submit my story for you. It's wonderful to see how these personal stories can inspire others to take the leap! Thank you for bringing this together.
I've followed Amy and Curt's adventures for several years now and it's very impressive and educational to see how they overcome the challenges they face.
I too have managed to move away from the big city to live off-grid in the Cariboo. However, I still have to work, but am fortunate enough to have a job that is a mix of remote work and traveling.
This lifestyle certainly has its challenges but, just like Amy, I find it way more rewarding than city life.
I look forward to being out here 100% of the time. Until then, I have a careful balance of living in the modern world and living as if it was 70 years ago :D
I love this story. If I had a partner I would go the same thing. I do a bit of the van life. I was out and just got back from 2 weeks in the Sierra. I am a different person out there. I am alive. I feel a part of all that surrounds me. Nature has become my family. I rise when the sun is beginning to peak over the mountains and fall asleep as it’s setting, letting the alpenglow guide me into a peaceful slumber.
When I get back to my house~ it’s a different story and I begin planning my exit once again from this reality, to my reality~ out here.
Similar to my story - left the big dollar rat race for the quiet life in the mountains of BC - maybe Amy and I are neighbours. 😂 Does she write a substack?
Scott, have you heard Nate’s podcast, the great simplification? I believe he would find your account of the Perma ag lifestyle both wonderful and inspirational.
Sounds dreamy.. I would love to be able to do something like this but I'm over 50 now, single, and my body just isn't what it used to be.. Plus my parents are getting older and I want to be here for them. Also, I'm a grandma now! 😊 So as dreamy as as it sounds to walk away from everything and start anew in the mountains, not sure I am able/willing to live that kind of life now, so I just keep trudging on. Something else that I think about is.. "no matter where you go, there you are." So some people may think that they can escape by going into the mountains but may find that their problems don't go away, their thoughts don't go away, their behaviors, patterns, beliefs, and programming don't just vanish and they still have to do the internal work, regardless of surroundings. So while escaping the rat race into the mountains for some is doable, there's far more to it than just living in nature. What I want to hear is the story of breaking free from the mind and the 9 to 5 grind, to live a peaceful, rewarding, simpler life, right where you are, going into nature as often as possible. Cuz that's what I'm doing 💓
I do love these stories and dream of this kind of life where I get to have my time be free and see beautiful places..

Ditto!! How 'young' are you? I'll be 52 in August..
Older than you. Haha! I'll be a young 64 this fall, but I'm only reminded when I look in a mirror. I still feel like I'm in my 40s.
A wonderful story. Thanks for sharing it.
This feels like a story of reclaiming—bold and heartfelt.
The wilderness as a mirror to the soul is powerful. 🪴

I'm checking it out too.. Thanks for the suggestion!
No, I haven't. But thanks...I'll try to check it out.
Wonderful story✨

You’re absolutely right. Changing your surroundings can be beautiful and inspiring, but the real transformation happens from within.
Congrats on becoming a grandma!
